The only things that Vista does that XP doesn't are the Aero Glass UI and DirectX 10 games. It sounds like your system isn't going to be up to DX10 gaming anyway and there are and IMV isn't worth the cost, either in terms of buying it or the hassle you're likely to have getting your sound as good as it was.

Looking Glass - Real 3d desktop - ¿will win aero glass?
It can use XP drivers, and can expoit the hardware acceleration the old cards provided for drawing operations as XP did. You don't get Aero Glass, but you do get performance. Obviously, this becomes less relevant over time. Show me evidence that you get better performance on a lower end PC running Vista than you do

If you are not doing gaming, the component of the system that will be the most demanding of video will be Vista itself, eg it's Aero/Glass interface. Video is NOT demanding of a video card, but Aero/Glass is. But there are plenty of $100 to $200 video cards (even a few below $100) that are really pretty good and

That
will give you cards with at least 128 MB of video memory. (That's the requirement for Aero Glass.) The cheapest will be around $40US (plus shipping). Good luck getting any rebate back from Fry's without a big fight. Avoid rebates and buy online cheaper if you can. I've been there and done that.

I deleted QuickTime and I still don't have Aero Glass and I took a good look at my video card which is a GeForce FX5200 with 128 megs of memory. I even restarted the Boinc service, after updating, for good measure. I see the same behavior as you do: Boinc doesn't suspend the SETI clients after coming out of idle. BTW: Do you have Aero Glass working? I tried to get it up and going, but I don't think the video card in that computer will do it. Oh well.

[Avalon/Aero Team] For usability sake, I'd ask that they throw another 'experience' on top of the stack (Classic, Aero, Aero Glass, something). The beta is expected soon and, IMHO, the CTP(Community Technical Preview, available to MSDN Universal subscribers I believe) is pretty good over all.

I can really see Vistas huge graphic card "needs" causing a further shift away from MS as companies realise there on board cards dont cut it. Then maybe you should look again. Intels current shared memory offering is Dx9 capable and also able to display all the Gizmos of Vistas Aero Glass desktop.

BE7 and Vista
First Aero glass. In first few minutes it looked nice but then it started driving me nuts. Too much visual gizmos and slowdowns. Just a great distractor. Boot time is very good but many apps for some reason behave sluggishly whether in aero or classic mode. So IMHO it is a total waste of effort and money.

Aero glass. Sidebar. Windows Contacts. UAC. All very good and whatnot and yes, fine, most of 'em are better/prettier/whatever than in XP. Now compare them to Linux. I don't know if Vista has improved the basic faults of Windows in this arena, but as a simple example, take network card support.

I know the FX's aren't the greatest to run Aero Glass, but it should run halfway decent at least at a 1024x768 resolution. My next card will likely be at least in the 6000's if not 7000's if my Athlon XP 2400+ doesn't bottleneck. (I've got it overclocked to a 160FSB instead of a 133 running pretty good.
