Serial killer or Steam Killer?
However that won't get you the Vista Aero interface, which makes a move to Vista from XP more or less pointless. The minimum requirements for running Aero on a Vista Premium PC are ?a DX9 GPU, 128 MB of VRAM, Pixel Shader 2.0, and minimum resolution 1024×768×32?, and for Aero Glass it's even higher than that.

Vista and Longhorn Server Beta 2 look pretty good to me when running like this - better than they do using Remote Desktop from XP for example. Colin Barnhorst wrote: If you mean can you get Aero Glass to function on the S3 emulated card, the answer is no. It does not support 3D drawing.

I cracked the Vista Code! (Christmas special)
Only 1.21% had the DirectX10 card - allowing them to run Aero Glass. Which pretty much leaves most of the 5% of those surveyed as Running Vista instead of XP - not really seeing much value The good news for Microsoft is that there is still a market for new machines which are "Linux Ready" and shipped with XP.

Aero glass is gone???
Aero - Windows Aero (formerly/alternately known as Aero Glass) is the revamped version of the Windows GUI, a gussied up, prettified, 3D interface that's supposed to make you oooh and aaah... provided you have the hardware to run it. If you don't have a relatively recent 3D graphics card, you won't be able to run

The 9550 is a good performer, but on the Performance scale that was in Windows Vista, it was the weakest link! If you're doing word processing, business apps, photo processing, etc, it is more than adequate. For these tasks I saw very little improvement over a 7000 card I had!

Yeah I recall some issues with the matrox card I had at work (both displays had to be the same size), but I assumed that has been fixed in later drivers, ..... With Avalon, Aero Glass, WinFX, and Indigo some serious refactoring (buh-bye X11) is going to have to be done for the linux desktop to be in the same league

Aero glass is gone???
One of the underlying rationales for having a high-powered graphics card with lots of memory for Vista is to improve graphics performance overall. That's good to know since my laptops only have 1gb (my newest desktop has 2gb). Barry, does Vista run faster with Aero Glass turned off compared to on (on the same

My Vista/Delphi/Dev experience
So, I added a relatively inexpensive and well thought of 3D graphics card, the 256MB Nvidia GeForce 7600. With this card, Aero Glass's performance became usable. In its original incarnation, this was one of those "good" ideas that flops to the canvas in the first round of a real fight.
